Tennant Creek

Only for those with a sense of adventure.

Tennant Creek is the outback town with a heart of gold - literally! For decades it has offered travellers a welcome break in a long journey. The town is situated 997 kilometres south of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory in Australia. cockatooThis is the true outback, part of the region in which "Crocodile Dundee" was filmed in the 1980's. This is no place for the weak spirited, temperatures casually reach into the 40's (Celsius scale) and big city trappings are another world away. Winter is the best time to visit the Territory when the "Big Wet" has finished and the environment is more tolerable for out-of-towners.

Founded in 1935 to support the miners rushing to exploit the rich gold deposits (Australia's last great gold rush), the area still produces gold in large quantities. To date the total fortune produced is around $4 Billion!

Tennant Creek also provides support for the many cattle stations in the region of Barkly. Cattle stations here are measured in thousands of kilometres, larger than many European countries!

There are many gold related tours and activities, click on the tours button to discover some of them.
